Letter to the Editor: “Paws to Read” Summer Reading Program

Colusa’s Libraries Complete
“Paws to Read”
Summer Reading Program 2014

This year’s “Pawformance” of Colusa’s Summer Reading program “PAWS TO READ” was fantastic! All branch libraries participated with a total of approximately 183 children throughout the county registered for the program. The children were asked to read 15 to 30 minutes a day and log it on their reading logs. All registered children received a plastic book bag, bookmark, book log, pencil and eraser, and the option to pick up home activity sheets which included crossword searches, word jumble, word searches and paw print matching, return them and receive a prize. The program ran for 4 weeks with weekly reading, crafts, and different activities.

The program encouraged the children to read on a daily basis. Colusa main library began their program with a stuffed animal parade, in which children were asked to bring in their favorite stuffed animal then paraded around the block. These animals were judged for the Smallest, Largest and Most Unusual animal, and the winner received a certificate.

The children learned a LIBRARY spelling cheer which was repeated every week using pom poms, experienced wonderful dog stories, crafts and fun music movement activity using Hula Hoops and a Limbo stick.

At the main library the children had a few special guests. Dogs were brought in, and the children took turns reading to the dogs. Another special guest was Officer Swift from the William’s Police department along with his canine partner Officer Rowdy, who pleased the children with the exhibition of his training skills.

Games and activities at the libraries included Scooby Doo and Izzy the elephant bean bag toss, Driving with (Hula)Hoops using the music of the Beach Boys, charades acting out various animal paw prints and the limbo. Crafts included a yarn dog, CD dog, Tug-of-War rope and a straw/popsicle stick picture frame.

This year out of the 183 registered children, we had a total of approximately 111 complete the 4 week program. Prizes were given out to the two top readers at each library branch, for those that read the most minutes that were logged onto their reading logs. CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WINNERS!!!! GREAT JOB!

I would like to see the children continue reading during the school year and also continue visiting their libraries in their communities. I also hope that the Summer Reading program encouraged, challenged and enabled the children to continue the fun reading, and helped avoid the “Summer learning loss” during the 4 weeks of the program.

I would like to “Thank” the Colusa Impact store, for donating items for crafts, Pam DeRoss from the Colusa Animal Shelter, Kathy Moran and Cielo Castanon-Tercero for bringing their dogs in for the children to read to, Officer K. Swift & his canine partner Officer Rowdy for the fantastic entertainment skills he exhibited. It was a wonderful learning experience for the children, Irene Cruz for creating our Scooby Doo activity. A Huge Special Thanks to Ann Amsden and Marilyn Acree, and Pam Niehues for all your hours and imput, and all the young adult volunteers who helped make this year’s program fun and a great positive experience to all the children who participated.

THANK YOU ALL!
