Colusa Woman Dies after SUV Runs Stop Sign in Sutter County

A 57-year-old Colusa Woman was killed after a sport utility vehicle ran a stop sign in Sutter County, injuring three others.

Juana Leon Gutierrez was the passenger of a 2004 Chevy Impala traveling southbound on Highway 99 when for unknown reasons, 19-year-old Sukhpreet Shokar traveling eastbound on O’Banion Road in a 2002 Ford Escape, entered the highway directly in the path of the Impala.

Consequently, the driver of the Chevy Impala, a 60-year-old Colusa man, was unable to apply the brakes in time and directly impacted the driver side of the Ford Escape, as reported by the California Highway Patrol in a news release.

Both vehicles traveled across the northbound lane of Highway 99 and landed on their wheels.

The driver of the Impala and a 25 year old passenger were transported to Rideout Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the Ford Escape was life-flighted to Sutter Health Medical Center in Roseville.

The collision happened at approximately 4:05 P.M on Tuesday, February 19th, 2014.

O’Banion Road is controlled by stop signs on both the east and west side of Highway 99.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in this collision as it is still under investigation at this time.
