HAE is a very rare genetic disease characterized by unpredictable episodes of internal and external swelling. Swelling may occur in the hands, feet, face and swelling of the larynx (throat) may result in suffocation and death. Swelling of the abdomen causes nausea, vomiting, dangerous loss of blood pressure and excruciating pain. 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50,000 persons are estimated to have HAE in the United States – about 6,000 people including 5 known Colusa residents.
