As the semi-annual ‘Celebrate Grimes Parade’ headed through the town of Grimes on July 4th something a little different from past years took place.
There was a celebration of not only the town but also of one of its native sons now gone.
The honorary Grand Marshall of the parade was the late Simon (Sy) Robles who passed away in 2013. Robles was represented by his mother; Justina Robles and his widow Luz Robles as they rode in his honor in the parade.
The two women were driven by Todd Gustafson in an red Ford Mustang convertible with a sign bearing one of Simon Robles’ most famous quotes; “My life. . . its been a great ride.”
Simon Robles was well known and well loved in the tiny community of Grimes. . He suffered a serious accident at the age of 19 that left him a quadriplegic. He lived a very full life despite his injury. During his lifetime he helped hundreds of people in his community to build better lives.
His efforts within the farm worker community were recognized when he was named as one of five state finalists for the National Jefferson Award presented by the American Institute for Public Service and was given commendations by both the California State Assembly and Senate for his work.
Simon never let his disability deter him from living a good, full life. He married his wife Luz 14 years ago and together they operated a successful immigration and tax service business, all the while continuing to serve the community.
“We are so grateful that Sy was honored in such a way,” said Simon Robles’ sister Lupe Robles-Sane.
