‘Til Next Season: Colusa Certified Farmers Market

On Thursday, October 2, 2014 the Colusa Certified Farmers Market held its final market of the season.

“It was a great season this year,” said Melissa Bakie-Rick, Market Coordinator.

This was the first year for Bakie-Rick managing the market as former market coordinator Lynda Reynolds handed over the reins.

“It has been a pleasure hosting the market this year,” said Bakie-Rick, “Lynda has been very supportive in helping me make this year successful.”

Bakie-Rick added her own flavor to the market this year by instilling a positive farmer’s market spirit while adding a weekly raffle prize, children activities and live entertainment on non-concert nights.

“It was a bit more of a challenge than I anticipated,” said Bakie-Rick, “It’s tough to keep the enthusiasm of the community to keep the momentum going each week; but I have had fun doing it.”

While the 2014 Farmers Market may be at an end, Bakie-Rick is already planning for next year.

“I hope to start a Little Farmers program that will enable high school students needing community service hours to become involved in their community,” said Bakie-Rick.

She also plans on moving the market back away from the main road to increase safety and better parking.

“I am looking for someone to sponsor a hydration station with cool drinks and misters to help keep market patrons cool,” said Bakie-Rick, “I hope to also have an affordable, rotating dinner vendor available as well.”

The 2014 Colusa Certified Farmers Market Vendors included: the Friends of the Colusa County Animal Shelter, Arbuckle Paw Patrol, Barb’s Produce, Beth Lohman with Handcrafted Soaps, Bremmer’s Farm, Cal Fresh Outreach, Charles Fusaro of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Chavez Farms, David Velazquez Produce, Delishior, Dhillon Farms, Garden Gleanings, Henderson’s Peaches, J.V’s Dogs, Jefferys Ranch Pecans, Jax Kettle Corn, Lee Family Farm, Lee Little Garden, Origami Owl by Teia Miller, Premier Mushrooms, Q’s Holy Dozen Chicken Farm, Rosita Ranch, Saupo Guapo Cookies, Scentsy by Jennifer Velazquez, Tacos El Amigo, Tupperware by Beth Esposito, UC Cooperative Extension, Uncle Marc’s Creations, and Vue Family Farm.

“I would like to thank all those who have made the market possible and for those who have patronized our local business vendors,” said Bakie-Rick, “Thank you for buying fresh and local!”

The 2015 Certified Farmers Market is scheduled to begin June 11, 2014.
