Maria Sanchez Martinez (1932-2014)

maria-martinez-obituaryMaria De Los Angeles Sanchez Martinez, 82, passed away on April 16, 2014 at Enloe Hospital, Chico, CA. She was born on January 17, 1932 in Zacatecas, Mexico. Maria was the second oldest of eleven siblings. Maria was a long time resident of Butte City, Ca. She loved being close to her friends and neighbors and the peacefulness of living in a small rural town.

Maria married Jose Alejandro Martinez on April 14, 1951 in Fresnillo, Zacatecas. The couple traveled their way to California with their eight children working on many farms as laborers across the state. They settled in the Princeton area in 1964 with hopes of providing their children with a strong education and better future. Maria was widowed in 1973 and worked many long hours to provide for her children. The family together worked hard to buy the little home in Butte City which she loved. Maria saw each of her children graduate from high school and to have successful, meaningful careers.

Maria enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, canning, crocheting, needlework, and gardening. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren. They were the light of her life.

Maria is survived by seven of her eight children: Olga, Abel (granddaughter Christina), Raul (wife Celia and grandchildren Alexandra, Joseph, and Corey), Sergio, Maria Elena (husband Paul and grandchildren Andres and Carly), Marisela (granddaughter Samantha), and Orasio (wife Debra and grandchildren Mikenzie and Samuel). She is preceded in death by her daughter, Ramona.

The family would like to thank the staff at Twin Oaks, Chico, CA, for their care and kindness given to Maria during her last few months. The family also wishes to thank her friends for watching over her for many years, their continuous support and words of encouragement. We especially thank her close friend, Edelmira IBarra, who brought Maria so much joy and spiritual strength. Words cannot express our devotion for Edelmira’s support and love. We find comfort that Maria is with her daughter, Ramona, and caring for all her children and grandchildren from above.

A grave site burial will be planned at a later time.
