Amanda Bessie Woods (1920-2014)

WPR - OBIT - Bessie WoodsAmanda Bessie Woods was born March 8, 1920 in Orland, California. She was the oldest of six children of Arthur L. and Donna M. Capehart. After graduating from Maxwell High School, she met the love of her life, Samuel W. Woods. Sam and Bessie were married 63 wonderful, loving years and raised two adoring children, Donna and Gary.

Bessie was proud of being a native Californian and member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, fishing in the upper Sacramento River near Mt. Shasta & Dunsmuir, and painting. She became our “Grandma Moses”, creating works of art that family members cherish and display in their homes today. Her home and yard were always immaculately maintained.

Every day was a joy and blessing for Bessie. An eternal optimist, Bessie’s glass was always half full. Experiencing the hardships of the 1929 Great Depression, helping raise her siblings in the 1920’s & 30’s, and rationing of WWII shaped her character and integrity. She was a very special person who made a positive impact on everyone she met. Bessie never spoke an unkind word of anyone. She truly lived by the saying “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all”. Always very self- sufficient, even late in life when her health declined and healthcare needs increased, she “never wanted to bother anyone”. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Bessie is survived by her daughter Donna, son-in-law Bob, grandson Michael, great grandchildren Kayleigh, Abigale, & Hunter; son Gary, daughter-in-law Roxanne, grandsons Jason (Heather) and Aaron (Stacy); sisters Lorraine Corbin, Patty Totman, brother Bob Capehart (Lissa), and several nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Samuel Woods in 2001; parents Arthur L. & Donna M. Capehart; brother Jack Capehart, and an infant sister.

Bessie’s family would like to thank the staff of Prestige Assisted Living in Marysville for the loving care they showered on Bessie for the past five years. She was so happy to be able to spend her final days at her Prestige “home” with her extended family.

A celebration of life will be held at the Colusa Golf & Country Club on Sunday December 7, 2014 from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests that remembrances be sent to Sutter North Hospice 400 Plumas Blvd. Suite 115 Yuba City, CA 95991 or a charity or your choice.
