EDITORS NOTE: Due to impending weather conditions, the scheduled volunteer day for the SSG Alex Jauregui home has been moved to Saturday, February 14th. This article reflects that update.
A local military family is one step closer to having their dream home, thanks to the help of a non-profit organization dedicated to building specially adapted, mortgage-free home nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Homes for Our Troops is currently working with the Jauregui family of Williams. In 2012, SSG Alex Jauregui lost both legs and hearing in both ears and suffered extensive injuries to his right hand and forearm when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Sangsar, Afghanistan.
Homes for Our Troops partnered with Jauregui and his family to build them a home that would make life easier for Jauregui.
With construction making progress, Homes for Our Troops is calling on volunteers for ‘landscaping day’ on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 9:00 a.m located at 19709 Road 94 A, in Woodland, CA.
“The volunteer day is the landscaping day where we put a call out for volunteers to help lay sod and mulch, plant trees small bushes and plants,” said Community Outreach Coordinator Gina Colon.
Volunteers are required to bring work gloves and small garden tools.
“We are asking anyone who would like to attend to register on our website that way we get a count for our lunch being served to the volunteers,” Colon added.
The website, where volunteers can register, is: https://www.hfotusa.org/attend_event
The Jauregui home is expected to be completed by March of 2015 where a Key Ceremony will be held. During the Key Ceremony, SSG Jauregui will be escorted to his new home where all supporters are encouraged to line the street to help welcome the veteran to his new home.
