NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED WEEKLY ON THURSDAY

Local Quilters Help Veterans Preserve History for Virginia Read

The Pacific Flyway Quilters Guild is participating in the 2015 Virginia Yerxa Community Read by creating a beautiful memorial quilt to honor our local veterans.

This year’s book is The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, a collection of Vietnam War stories.

Inspired by this theme the Pacific Flyway Quilters Guild wanted to give local veterans a chance to tell a small part of their stories.

“We have created a memorial quilt with vintage looking Americana fabrics, and a place for our veteran’s information on the back,” said Dalene Coan, “There will be a space for each veteran to sign their name and special “Story Patches” will hold recordings of ‘The Things THEY Carried’ in their service to our country.”

“Stories are for joining the past to the future…Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story,” said Tim O’Brien in his books.

Quilts have always told stories, but now we have the technology to connect the quilt to recorded stories and pictures on the internet with QR Codes. Pacific Flyway Quilters Guild would like to invite all veterans, especially those who served in Vietnam, to come to a special gathering where we can write, record, photograph, or videotape part of your story.

Recording time is limited to approximately 3 minutes, and all is required is your name, rank, branch of service, years of service, location of service, whatever it is that you carried into the service or war, and what you still carry today.

“Whether what you carried was a tangible item you physically carried, i.e. a picture, book, letter, jewelry, weapon, tool; or an emotional thing: feeling, character trait, memory, hope or belief; we want you to tell us about ‘the things YOU carried’,” said Coan.

Please join the Pacific Flyway Quilters Guild for a history gathering event on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the VFW Hall, 108 Main Street in Colusa, from 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.

The Pacific Flyway Quilters Guild, a non-profit organization, will be raffling off the historic memorial quilt. Once completed the quilt will be on display at the

Friends Around the Block Quilt Shop, located at 433 Market Street in Colusa, where raffle tickets can be purchased for $1.00 each, 6 for $5.00 or 13 for $10.00.

The winner of the quilt will be announced at the Virginia Read Day Celebration, Saturday, April 25th. The person or group who wins this quilt will then have a historical treasure of stories from our own Colusa County Veterans preserved for a lifetime!
