After winning the Northern California Rugby Division 3 Championship, the Colusa County Rugby Football Club (CCRFC) team was presented with a proclamation that declares the month of May as Colusa County Rugby Football Appreciation and Awareness Month by Colusa City Mayor, Greg Ponciano.
“Not only has the CCRFC completed a huge accomplishment of becoming the Northern California Division 3 champions, but they have played a significant part in our community,” said Colusa City Mayor, Greg Ponciano.
On Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the Refuge Restaurant & Bar, Mayor Ponciano recognized the CCRFC for bringing a positive recognition to the City of Colusa by bringing attentions as well as visitors to the region.
“Not only do they play good rugby, they are respective and active representatives of our community,” said Ponciano, “they have hosted fundraisers, participated in the Toy’s for Tots and even assisted with the Egling Middle School After School Programs.”
The proclamation was presented to the club members during the special event.
“The proclamation was a huge compliment something to look at and to keep pushing forward with representing and giving back to the community,” said CCRFC President, Cody Beckley, “It put a lot of smiles on our faces and everybody was very proud and honored to receive it.”
Following the proclamation, the CCRFC competed in the USA Rugby National Championship Tournament, Sweet 16 on May 9, 2015 taking a win against Salem, 29-19.
“The game was hard fought by both sides and both teams showed huge heart,” said CCRFC Captain, Dominic Santucci, “We’ve had a couple of huge plays from our subs that came in late in the game, one being a huge defensive tackle by Dylan McPherson that changed the whole momentum of the game – we quickly scored and never looked back.”
“It was a very emotional game the crowd was a huge help hearing them having them in our head to keep working harder and to not give up,” said Cody Beckley
The team will move forward to the USA Rugby National Championships, Elite 8 in San Francisco on May 30, 2015.
“We will be competing against a team from the Frontier League, which is comprised of teams from the Midwest,” said Santucci.
“The support we have is amazing,” said Beckley, “we have the best fans!”<
