Colusa County Rugby Victorious in Pacific North Division III Championship

CCRFC defeats Salem (OR) Spartans 29-19

Colusa County Rugby Football Club is headed to the USA Rugby National Championship Tournament “Elite 8” after defeating the Salem Oregon Spartans in the USA Rugby Pacific North Championship by a score of 29-19.  CCRFC will play in the USA Rugby “Elite 8” representing one of the top 8 teams in the Nation.

Representing the Northern California Rugby Football Union, the Colusa Plowmen traveled to California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA to face off against the Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union Champions, Salem Spartans.

CCRFC scored in the first ten minutes of the match on a try by Paul Santinelli and were up 5-0 through the first half of play.  Pono Ohumukini ran in a 60-meter try in the first minute of the second half, and Cody Beckley kicked a successful conversion to make it 12-0.  Salem fought back with a score and conversion ten minutes into the half to cut Colusa’s lead to 5.  Colusa immediately returned fire when Pomo Saulque scored, and Beckley converted to make the score 19-5.  Salem tied up the match at 19-19 with two quick tries, but failed to convert.   Aaron Gutierrez scored to put Colusa on top 24-19, and Beckley scored with three minutes remaining to cement CCRFC’s win.

“We faced a very fit and skilled Salem club in the Sweet 16 round,” said CCRFC President, Cody Beckley.  “It was a great test for Colusa and we had to adjust some of our play to match their strengths, which allowed us play our game second half.”

“I was speechless at the conclusion of the match and simply overwhelmed by the situation, the win, and the next phase,” said forwards captain Dominic Santucci.  “Our fans deserve a huge amount of credit for the success we have had this season.  To see Colusa represented at this level on the pitch and in the stands is a testament to the loyalty to County Pride!”

CCRFC will continue in the USA Rugby National Championship Tournament where they are slotted to play in the Elite 8 on May 30-31, 2015 at San Francisco Golden Gate’s Ray Sheeran Field on Treasure Island.  They will face the winner of the Frontier (Midwest) Region.

Colusa County Rugby Football Club (C.C.R.F.C., Inc.) has been in existence since 1973. We are educating the community on a great sport and encourage everyone to participate in a fun and rigorous athletic activity. CCRFC has a mission to get more people playing rugby and educate our community through outreach.  We actively work with the Colusa community to develop a long lasting rugby tradition.  These programs involve many people of all athletic talents, sizes, and shapes. In addition to strengthening our organization, we are actively putting programs in place to recruit youth to the sport of rugby.<
