Relay for Life to be held August 8

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Colusa County is set to begin at 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.

Relay for Life is a celebration of cancer survivorship and a fun way to raise the vital funds needed to help find a cure for cancer. The event will celebrate the lives of residents who have survived cancer while offering the hope of finding a cure.

The organization hopes to raise $20,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“The event will being with a survivors’ lap where cancer survivors and their caregivers will take a victory lap around the track. The involvement of local cancer survivors is proof of the progress that has been made in improving cancer survival rates and the quality of life following cancer treatment,” said Krystal Brownfield, Relay for Life Community Manager.

Seeking Teams

Just a few months away, Brownfield encourages participants to register early.

“Teams are encouraged to sign up early as this gives them more time to raise money,” said Brownfield.

Each team member is asked to raise money before the event. Teams will solicit donations, have garage sales, host car washes, and more.

Business Sponsors Needed

“Cancer touches everyone, and involvement in the Relay for Life is a great way for companies to demonstrate their commitment to helping the American Cancer Society save lives and create a world with less cancer,” said Brownfield.

Many options for corporate sponsorships are available, including forming a team, providing in-kind donations of goods, purchasing event sponsor sign for track display, encouraging employees to volunteers at events, and collecting Relay donations at places of business.

Remembering those Lost and those who’ve won

A special luminary ceremony will be held during the event to remember those who lost the battle to cancer, and to those who have battled and won.

“It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Brownfield, “we hope to sell enough to light the entire area.”

Relay for Life is a community event that brings together teams of families, friends, church’s, neighborhoods, and businesses – all with the same goal of conquering cancer. Teams of walkers will keep a continuous presence on the track throughout the night, walking in shifts.

A full agenda of entertainment is planned, including music, team fundraising activities, fun theme laps and contests that last throughout the night.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest signature and the most successful national fundraiser. To date, Relay for Life events has raised more than $351 million at more than 5,000 events throughout the United States.
