Colusa, Sutter and Yuba Counties to Host “Labor of Love” to promote breastfeeding

Latch On (Eng)- Social MediaJoin other mothers and babies for a local “Labor of Love” Big Latch On, Saturday, August 1st, at the Yuba City Town Center/Farmer’s Market, Plumas Blvd between B and C Streets, from 10 am – 11am.

This inaugural event is hosted by the TriCounties Breastfeeding Alliance, a coalition of supporters from Colusa, Sutter and Yuba counties.

Every year, the first week of August (1 – 7th) is designated as World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).  The goal of WBW is to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and is celebrated in 120 countries around the world.

The event marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document Innocenti Declaration, which lists the benefits of breastfeeding, plus global and governmental goals.

Why an event to showcase breastfeeding?  The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life to optimize its benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years, and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a mother and her child.  Join us to celebrate breastfeeding, mothers and babies.

To mark this occasion, on Saturday, August 1st 2015, at 10:30 am, breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Global

Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations.

This area’s event for Colusa, Sutter and Yuba counties will be at the Yuba City Town Center fountain.  Moms and babies are encouraged to arrive at 10 am to register.

The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005; in the US, it was introduced to Portland, Oregon in 2010 and has now taken off globally.

This year’s goal is to break the current 2013 record of 14,536 children breastfeeding across 845 locations.

The long-term vision is that one day a Global Big Latch On event will be held within walking distance of every family in the world.

The Williams Pioneer Review has a small staff of one, covering all of Colusa County; but we’re proud to have the assistance of a large army of community contributors to extend our range and reach. This is one of those stories. If you have a story you would like to share, please email them to: or give us a call.
