For unknown reasons, Preciado allowed his vehicle to drift into the center median and after unsuccessfully attempting to correct his error, he lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle traveled across both northbound lanes and rolled several times before coming to rest on its tires in a nearby rice field. The field had knee deep water officials said.
The male passenger, Rudy Galvan, 19 of Orland was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned, and was discovered in the rice field approximately 100 feet from the vehicle.
In a statement released by the California Highway Patrol, officials say that despite lifesaving techniques and CPR performed by the responding Maxwell Firefighters and CHP Officer, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preciado sustained minor injuries during the collision and declined medical treatment.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver was wearing his seatbelt, and that the passenger’s seatbelt use remains under investigation.
