Celebrating its last summer concert for 2015, the Citizens for a Better Williams hosted its first ever Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off on Thursday, August 13, 2015, in Venice Park.

Five teams competed in the Badge Challenge pinning the best cooks of the Colusa County Sheriff’s Department and the Williams Fire Department against Team McKasson, Granzella’s Inc, and the Maxwell Parks & Recreations Dept.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the first Badge Challenge,” said Citizens for a Better Williams President, Pat Ash.

The event served a total of 275 dinners.

The Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off was the brainchild of Cliff Harlow who brought the idea to the group.

“We would like to thank Cliff for all of his hard work in organizing the event,” said Ash.

Proceeds from the ‘Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off’ will benefit the Williams Fire Department and their efforts to restore “Old Engine #1”.

A 1929 Dodge Brothers Fire Truck will soon be given new life with the help of the support from the community.

Having a long history of fire fighting, engine #1 was purchased from Princeton Fire Department in the 1980’s after its discovery.

“The engine was stored in an old garage next to the auto parts store,” said Supervisor Mark Marshall, who served as the department’s Assistant Fire Chief, “we brought it home, painted it up and it served many years as our parade vehicle.”

The truck was put into storage for a few years and when recovered the truck needed some repairs from the frame up.

The Williams Fire Department hopes to restore the truck to resemble its glory days, but will forever remain as a parade vehicle, proudly displaying the department’s history and heritage.

In addition to delicious ribs, guests enjoyed music from the 1950’s and the 1960’s performed by the Hot Rod’s band; while browsing a several vintage and classic cars from the Magwinders Car Club.

“We would like to thank everyone who came out and attended the Bad Challenge Rib Cook-off and Concert,” said Ash, “and we would like to extend our gratitude to Louis Cairo’s for donating the bread, Granzella’s for donating the uncooked ribs, and the Williams Fire Department who prepared their famous firehouse beans.”

Additionally the group would like to thank Selover’s Paint & Body for donating the trophies awarded that evening.

Ash said that she hopes to see the event continue next season as part of the concert sendoff.

As the event came to a close, the Colusa County Sheriff’s Department – 2nQue BBQ took champion of 2015 Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off, and the Williams Fire Department was selected as the Peoples Choice Award.
