“The Growing Start Program is a parent cooperative early learning playgroup for children ages 6-weeks to pre-kindergarten,” said Ginger Harlow, First 5 Colusa director.
The program provides an opportunity for children to socialize with peers of the same age and engage in activities to encourage early learning.
“The child and their parent will work together in creative arts, music, movement, language and literacy curriculum activities that will help prepare for school readiness,” said Harlow.
The unique program is open to children who are NOT currently being services by Head Start, State Preschool, or a licensed Child Care facility.
“These students will have first priority for enrollment,” said Harlow, “it’s a unique opportunity for parents to gain resources, training and support when they are ineligible for other services.”
The classes will be held two days a week or twice a month depending on age groups.
“The program calendar closely corresponds with the school calendars,” said Harlow.
Enrollees must be up-to-date on their immunization records, participated in a health and dental screening 30 days from enrollment and must have parent or guardian who can actively participate with the child during the program. There is no income requirement.
“We ant the child to build a relationship with their parent or guardian and we hope they replicate the activities and lessons at home,” said Harlow.
Upon completion of the program, the children will receive a development portfolio and receive development evaluations.
“The students will have a graduation ceremony at the end celebrating their progress and family participation,” said Harlow.
