Witherell’s auction hunt yields treasures

CA Discoveries August

An appraiser for Antiques Roadshow recently found a number of valuable items when he came to the Coluse and Butte County area.

In Arbuckle, appraiser Brian Witherell found a rare, early Bacchante’s vase by famed French designer Rene Lalique.

Originally the property of Lee Traynham’s mother-in-law, this stunning vase is valued at $15,000 to $25,000 and will be offered in Witherell’s March 2016 premier auction.

Three Plein Air paintings by California artist Franz Bischoff were consigned to Witherell’s auction house by Chico resident Stan Bell.
His mother had purchased the paintings in the 1970’s for a few hundred dollars at a Butte County charity event.

Approximately 15 x 20 inches, the artworks have been estimated at $3,000 to $5,000 each.

They will be sold in May 2016 at Witherell’s annual Western Design Auction.

The artifacts of a Plains Indian warrior were brought out of storage by Mary Dezman, an  Oroville woman, who inherited them in from her father.

The items came to Dezman through a relative’s marriage to a full-blooded, Native American woman.

Beaded moccasins, two ceremonial clubs, a porcupine-quill headdress and a beaded tobacco bag were part of the collection.

Because the possessions of Native American warriors rarely remained together as a group, they are very valuable when they do.

This one contains nearly all the prestigious items a warrior would have had.

Estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, this unique find will be also offered in Witherell’s Western Design Auction.

Witherell’s continually searches for valuable items for the company’s ongoing auctions.

Photographs of items can be emailed auctions@witherells.com for consideration.

Founded in 1969, Witherell’s does appraisals and auctions of objects of value—from decorative arts and design to antiques and fine art.

Witherell’s places items globally through private sales, online auctions and the annual Witherell’s Old West Antiques Show in May.
