4th annual Colusa Coastal Clean-up SUCCESS!

2015 Colusa River Cleanup 3

While the number of pounds of debris collected along the banks of the Sacramento River in Colusa on Saturday during the annual Coastal Clean-up Day didn’t add up to as much as in previous years, organizers felt it was their best effort ever.

The annual event coordinated by Premier Mushrooms Inc. sustainability coordinator Kevin Foley proved to be one of the best to date. He said, “The goal is ti find less and less garbage each year – which is what we’ve been seeing. This means there is less dumping taking place and the impact we’re making is having a lasting positive impact.”

Several discarded chemical jugs were found along the Sacramento River banks. Volunteers collected and properly disposed of the containers.

More than 75 volunteers from local families, groups and organizations collected 790 pounds of debris this year.  “The number of volunteers and varied interest groups just continues to grow each year,” Foley said.

Foley commented that in past years they had hauled out a lot of heavy items such as washing machines, furniture and tires from the clean up area around the State Park.

“There wasn’t that many large items collected this year, but in comparison it takes a lot of lighter weight debris to equal 790 pounds,” he added.

Some of this year’s volunteers committed that they would like to continue the effort next year and maybe bring their boats or kayaks so as to reach the adjacent side of the river for clean up.

Volunteers including individual families as well as representatives from a variety of groups and organization took part in this year’s event.

Colusa County Supervisors Denise Carter and John Louden and his wife Nancy joined with Premier Mushroom Inc. employees, Central Valley Gas Storage employees, Friday Night Live groups from both Williams and Colusa, Safe Haven Drop-In Center, Williams Nursery, Colusa Presbyterian and Arbuckle Community Churches, Our Lady of Lourdes,  Colusa High School music students and families, One Stop, Recology and River Partners for the clean-up.

While there was an assortment of tossed items found in this year’s clean-up one of the more disturbing items according to Carter was the discovery of used chemical containers, some still including chemical that would be extremely harmful if spilled into the river waters.  “It’s a simple process to discard these containers in a legal manner,” she said.

Central Valley Gas Storage once again co-sponsored the event with Steelhead Lodge and the mushroom growers. Other local sponsors and supporters include, Net Impact Sacramento, Recology, River Partners, Tacos El Amigo and Ink’d Up and Stitched Out.

With 75% of the cleanup sites reporting, the statewide count stood at 53,555 volunteers at the end of the weekend.

Statewide volunteers picked up 548,450 pounds of trash and an additional 65,738 pounds of recyclable materials, for a total of 614,188 pounds or 307 tons.
