Colusa County Superintendent of Schools, Mike West was impressed by the many fun, learning experiences featured at the Colusa County Pumpkin Village hosted at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.

The Colusa County Pumpkin Village was hosted October 21 through the 25 with the first three days reserved for area schools.

“The students are having a wonderful time,” said West, “and they’re completely engaged with the activities that are subversively teaching them skills.”

West explained that activities such as the petting zoo, corn box (like a sandbox, but filled with dried corn), story teller stage, rubber ducky races, and corn cob cannon, all of which surrounded a twenty-five-foot pyramid made entirely of hay, provided a myriad of cognitive and tactile learning opportunities for the students.

Other attractions included carnival rides, a barrel train rides, and a field chocked-full of pumpkins.  A covered wagon was available to transport students back and forth to the patch and then delivered their pumpkins safely to school buses

Colusa Fairgrounds CEO, Jonathan Howard emphasized that the event would never have been possible without a host of volunteers.

“This was a community effort to pull it all together,” said Howard, “We’ve couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Some of the volunteers included Pam Niehues, who ran her own pumpkin patch for many years and provided invaluable help and advice in setting up the event. Terri Rivera of Colusa spent numerous of hours painting signs and photo props for the event.

The Colusa County VFW, Post 2441 and the Colusa Lions Club organized and prepared lunches for the students and teachers.

“It was a lot of fun seeing the kids come out and have fun,” said Colusa Lions Club member, John Smart, “this is a great event for Colusa County.”

Many of the events were available at little to no cost.

“We would like to thank those who made generations donations and volunteered their time to make this event a success,” said Howard.

West appreciated the low cost and locality of the event and commented, “I think this Pumpkin Village rivals anything I’ve seen in our County since I arrived in 1986.”

The weekend following the Pumpkin Village families from around the area came to the pumpkin village and participated in the events.

“This is a great thing for Colusa County,” said a parent attendee, “it is great to have something local, and affordable – I hope the event continues as it has the potential to grow.”
