Senior Project: Olympic Weight-lifting

2015---CCSC-1Introducing Colusa County Youth to Olympic Weight-lifting is Colusa High School Senior – Hailey Werre, 18.

Werre started in the cross fit program with Colusa County Strength and Conditioning after her father sparked the interest.

“My dad used to beg me to go to cross fit with him,” said Werre, “finally one day I went with him and became very interested in it.”

Werre said that she started with the gyms fundamentals class, and she became good friends with CCSC co-owner, Erica Eisenhut.

“Erica became my favorite trainer, and now she is my mentor,” said Werre.

After a few years, Werre’s passion for health, fitness, and cross fit began to grow – and she decided to build her senior project around her experience and introduce Colusa counties youth to the benefits of physical fitness.

“I decided to start the Flex Appeal Weight-lifting Club because I could see a career in it,” said Werre.

CCSC co-owner, Erica Eisenhut commented, “I am proud of Hailey, and she has performed above her requirements for the project; she has already spent over 100 hours in the planning and implementing the club.”

Eisenhut said that Werre spoke with area schools and introduced the idea to them.

Open to all Colusa County High School, aged students, the CCSC Flex

Appeal Weight-lifting Club is offered at no cost.

“We have ten spaces available,” said Werre, “and applications are available at the area schools.

Were also commented that the program is open to anyone, even those who don’t have any athletic experience.

“This program is open to everyone, and no experience is necessary,” said Werre, “All participants will start with the fundamentals of weight lifting and work together and at their pace.”

For Werre to provide instruction she had to complete her Sports Performance Certification; in which she obtained earlier this year in Sacramento with the USA Weight lifting Organization.

“It was two days of death,” said Werre, “but I finished the course and certified.”

Werre hopes that participants will gain a new healthy lifestyle while building confidence.

“Kids these days are unhealthy, they have bad eating habits and are lazy,” said Werre, “The techniques and support they receive in the program can translate outside of the gym and into real life.”

Participants will learn the fundamentals of weight lifting including ‘Snatch’ and the ‘clean and jerk.’

“The program will begin on December 8 and will run for five months,” said Werre, “at the end of the program we will host a competition.”
Applications for those who are interested are due no later than November 27.

“Applications are available at each of the schools, or on the CCSC Website and Facebook Page,” said Werre.

Applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA during the program, and are required to train a minimum of two-hours per week during the scheduled classes.

Werre commented, that if more than ten applications are received, a formal interview process will be conducted.

“Participants must be prepared to journal their personal accomplishments specific to weight-lifting and any nutritional habits,” said Werre, “additionally they are required to train a minimum of two hours per week at our regularly scheduled classes.”

The classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM at Colusa County Strength & Conditioning (1023 Main Street, Colusa), starting December 8.
