In honor of the year-long Centennial Celebration, the Colusa County Free Library will hold a one-time “Amnesty Week,” January 4–8, allowing library patrons to return long-overdue and lost items without any fines. Notices will be sent to all patrons with overdue materials.
Special amnesty applies to Colusa County Free Library materials only: the library cannot waive fines for other libraries. All books, DVDs, CDs, videos and other materials returned to the library must be in good and usable condition for others to enjoy.
A prize will be given for the longest over-due item returned. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest library fine ever paid was levied in Illinois. Emily Canellos-Smith returned a book to the Kewanee Public Library 47 years late, after finding it at her mother’s house. At 2 cents a day, Canellos-Smith had to pay $345.14.
