Bertell Freed (1928-2015)

Freed, BertellBertell Fouch Freed passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, in Williams, California, four days short of her 97th birthday. Bertell was the youngest daughter born to Bert Leland Fouch and Carrie Schaad Fouch on August 27, 1918.

Bertell was a faithful mother to Gayle Arce of Las Vegas, Janis (Bob) DeWitt of Santa Cruz, and Bob (Cindy) Freed of Williams. She was a devoted grandmother to Tina (Mike) DeRungs of Granite Bay, Tony (Hether) Arce of Auburn, Savahanna Rennick of Chico, and Makayla and Fallon Freed of Williams. She was the much loved great grandmother of Sean and Ashlin DeRungs of Granite Bay. Bertell is also survived by Ann Jauregui Jovich and Susan Eagleton Bassett who were like daughters to her, and by her step grandchildren Ryan (Sonja) DeWitt and Vicki ((Matt) McCandless and step great grandchildren Milena and Max DeWitt, Deanna Garcia and Macy and Sam McCandless. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Freed, her parents, and her sisters, Augusta Fouch and Harriet Bird.

Bertell’s life centered on her children and their needs and activities. As they were growing up she was an active PTA member and room mother and attended whatever activities they were involved in. This also applied to her grandchildren. She was born in Williams and graduated from Williams High School in the Class of 1936; proudly being the oldest living alumni of the school at its centennial celebration in 2011. She then attended Armstrong Business College in Berkley. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and a life long member of the Williams Community Church. In all that she did, Bertell was always considered someone that you could depend on to be helpful and to do it willingly. Always putting others first.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Valley West Care Center who provided loving comfort and assistance to our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Your devotion is so appreciated and we will forever be so grateful.

Friends and family are invited to attend a grave side service on Saturday, August 29, at 10:30 am at the Williams Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Williams Community Church.

In Bertell’s memory, contributions may be made to the Williams Cemetery Fence Fund, Shriners Children’s Hospital, and to the Sacramento Valley Museum or to a charity closest to your heart.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNary-Moore Funeral Service FD-410, (530) 458-2111.
