John was the first born of his four siblings to Eugene and Marie Polit in Colusa, on October 12, 1932. His parents had emigrated to the U.S. from the Basque country along the border of France and Spain.
John attended school in Maxwell before serving in the 11th Airborne Division 503 & 504 Airborne Infantry Regiment as a paratrooper.
He is survived by his children; Randy Polit, Mike & Sherry Polit, Terri & Jim Auld, Leslie & Janet Hase, Paul & Laura Hase, Katherine & Don Altnow and Eddie & Teisha Hase. His siblings; Mary Godfrey, Sam Polit, Paul Polit and Michaela Polit. As well as numerous Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.
While working for GCID Water District, John was also a sheep and cattle rancher and did so for many years until he found his devotion as a rice farmer. John lived his life as a hard-working man, dedicated to farming all the way until his last days. When asked, “When do you plan on retiring?”, his answer was ‘How can I retire from something I love doing?”.
John was actively involved at the Maxwell Fire Department, American Legion Post 218, Willows Elks Lodge, chairperson of the Maxwell Rodeo and a team member on the Men’s Sports League.
John loved Jeep rides, camping, visits to Fort Bragg and Crescent City with his wife, but above all, loved to go out dancing where he met the love of his life, Dorothy.
John was preceded in death by his Father & Mother, Eugene & Marie Polit; Brother Charlie Polit; His wife Dorothy Polit and his grandson Jarred Polit.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, from 9:00- 9:30 a.m., Funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the McNary-Moore Chapel on 107 5th Street, in Colusa. After the service, interment will be at the Maxwell Cemetery with full Military Honors.
