RELIGION: The Birthday

Two women, dressed in their finest, were enjoying lunch together in a very exclusive restaurant.  A friend saw them and came over to their table to greet them.  “What’s the special occasion?” she asked.

One of the women replied, “We’re having a birthday for my little boy.  He’s two years old today.”

“Where is he?” asked the friend.

The child’s mother answered, “Oh, I dropped him off at my mother’s house.  She’s taking care of him until the party’s over.  It wouldn’t have been any fun with him along!”

How ridiculous!  A birthday celebration for a child who wasn’t welcome at his own party?

Yet, when you stop to think about it, that’s no more foolish than going through the Christmas season, with all of its festivities, without remembering the One whose birth we are supposed to be honoring!

How can we go about actually honoring Christ this Christmas?

Here are some ideas:
– Give as much attention to making Christ at home in your heart as you do in straightening and decorating your house for the holidays.
– Devote as much energy to worshiping Christ as you do to attending parties and holiday gatherings.
– Give as much time to talking with Jesus (through prayer) as you do in writing and sending and reading Christmas cards to and from others whom you also enjoy keeping in touch with.
– Spend as much on a gift or contribution that will honor Christ or will spread His love as you spend on gifts to others or as you spend on holiday goodies for yourself.
– When tempted to vent your impatience or frustration on workers at stores or the post office or wherever, consider the kindness and patience of Jesus.  The best way to honor Him is to imitate the way He cared for others.
– Make it your aim to love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself.  This is the gift Jesus would most like from you.

In doing these things, you may end up enjoying the best Christmas of your life.
