The Colusa County Relay for Life is still months away, but the organization took giant leaps to prepare for the upcoming year.

Colusa County Relay for Life Members held their Kickoff event Wednesday night at Steelhead Lodge giving people the opportunity to learn about the event, sign up to participate and to thank those who supported last year’s event.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Elly Gutierrez who took on the position as the Experience Lead for the event, “This was our first kickoff, and it was a great success!”

Approximately 50 people attended the two-hour event, some prior year participants, and sponsors while some were interested in learning more about the event.

Additionally, the group discussed goals, plans, and future meeting dates.

“We had quite a few people who signed up for the event that night,” said Gutierrez.

Last year was the organization’s first Relay for Life event in Colusa County and was deemed the most successful for its size.

“We had over 200 people come out and participate and raised nearly $30,000 – exceeding its initial $15,000 goal,” said Krystal Brownfield, American Cancer Society Community Manager, “this year the Colusa County group has set a $50,000 goal and to increase its participation.”

Monique Spence, who is serving as the Accounting Lead for the Colusa County Relay for Life event, commented that she and the rest of the committee would like to thank Colusa Industrial Properties and Steelhead Lodge Bar and Grill for their generous donation.

“Steelhead Lodge gave us a nice V.I.P. Treatment,” said Spence, “The food was excellent, and Heather Frost did an amazing job decorating the venue with white tablecloths, purple napkins, and other purple themed items.”

Guests were served a delicious meal and appetizers all sponsored by Steelhead Lodge Bar & Grill

The guest speaker for the evening was Certified Health Educator, Elaine Lucero MPH of Oroville.

Lucero, a former resident of Princeton, gave a unique presentation inviting guests to search through a bag of cotton balls and toss them at each other around the room. When the fun was over, guests were then instructed to pick up the cotton balls and to feel each one. Several of the cotton balls were filled with a hard seed signifying what a lump would feel like in breast tissue.

“Elaine also discussed the various research and resources available for cancer patients,” said  Elly Gutierrez.

“For being our very first kickoff event, I felt like we did an excellent job,” said Spence, “every attendee walked away with a plan and inspired by the event.”

This year’s Colusa County Relay for Life will be held at the Colusa County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 6th from 10 AM to 10 PM.

“I hope to see everyone out at our relay!” said Spence.
