Marsh Represents Colusa County at Society Range Management Forum

Mary Marsh High School Youth ForumMary Marsh, a senior at Pierce High School in Arbuckle, represented the California Pacific Section of the Society for Range Management (SRM) at its High School Youth Forum jointly held during the 69th SRM annual meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas January 31 – February 4, 2016.

High school youth delegates to the Forum are chosen by each of the 21 individual sections of the SRM throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico based on their high degree of interest in the range and natural resources field as well as on their exemplary dedication and effort to learn more about this particular area.

As one of the more important activities, each delegate to the Forum competes in a paper presentation competition covering a range related topic.

Mary’s was titled Light It Up, promoting more prescribed burns, logging, grazing and re-seeding in the Snow Mountain area of Colusa County.

Mary was honored by her fellow delegates and was selected to serve as the High School Youth Forum president at the 2017 annual meeting to be held in Utah.

She will assist the SRM’s Student Activities Committee to plan and conduct the 2017 Forum.

The Society for Range Management is an international organization that strives to promote public awareness of the importance of sound management and use of rangeland, the world’s largest land base.

In 1966, the SRM recognized a need to involve youth with the range-related activities and education provided at this annual meeting.  Since that time the High School Youth Forum has been a highlight of the SRM annual meetings.

While at the Forum, delegates have the opportunity to meet people from other states and countries, learn about the SRM’s goals and efforts, practice critical thinking and communication skills, learn about range management and future careers through interaction with SRM professionals, and explore the ecology and natural resources of the annual meeting site.
