Preparation is underway for the 73rd Annual Stonyford Rodeo, to be held on April 30 and May 1, 2016.

A crew of twenty or so Stony Creek Horsemen’s Association members turned out on Saturday, February 20, 2016, for their first 2016 rodeo workday. The primary work for this day was the layout and groundwork for building a new holding pen and a new loading chute, on the arena’s south end, for the rodeo stock.

Ten men, under the leadership of Director David Brandenberger, applied their individual skills to initial prep tasks that included welding, measuring, and auguring post holes.

In future work days, which will happen on most weekends between now and April 30, the pen and chute will come together as a done deal. While the men were doing their thing, other members were attending to cleaning chores in readying the cook shack and other facilities.

The Stony Creek Horsemen’s Association was formed in 1943 to manage the Stonyford Rodeo. This rodeo has been an annual event, and 2016 marks its 73rd year. The rodeo is administered and all of the work needed to put it on every year is done by the members—no hired workers. Members meet throughout the year to discuss and plan this event, but the major work begins in February and continues unabated until the last event, Bull Riding, happens on Sunday every year.

Come on out to Stonyford and see the results of all this work. Get your tickets online at www.stonycreekhorsemen.org, or at any of the area businesses shown on the website. Tickets purchased in advance of the rodeo are $10 for adults and $6 for children. Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $7 for children. Go to the website for a schedule of weekend events.
