Colusa County Rugby Battles Napa Rugby to a 36-36 Tie

CCRFC 8-0-1 Heading Into Last Match

Colusa County Rugby Football Club (CCRFC) traveled to American Canyon, CA Saturday, March 26, 2016 to face the undefeated Napa Rugby club in a much anticipated match.  CCRFC and Napa were both atop the NCRFU Division III standings heading into the match and both remain in pole position for playoffs.

Napa opened up the scoring in the first five minutes with a try, but CCRFC fired back quickly and often, scoring at the 7, 12 and 17th minutes.  CCRFC was up 17-5 before Napa battled back to tie the match at 17 in the 21st minute.  Mitch Barsotti, Gerardo Para and Daniel Powers scored in the first half, with Beckley converting two of four.  The half ended with the score tied at 24 and setting up the remaining forty minutes for an all out battle for NCRFU supremacy.

In the second half, CCRFC opened the scoring with Lukas Polit making an incredible defensive play, picking the ball in flight to score again, putting CCRFC up by a score of 29-24.  Napa battled back to tie the score at 29.  Beckley made an incredible kick that landed in Connor Herrick’s hands on the run, as he beat ex-CCRFC wing Pono Ohumukini and put CCRFC up 36-29 with Beckley’s conversion.  Napa scored at the 70-minute mark to tie up the score at 36 and where it stood through full time.

“We spent last week working on things that we needed to improve on and to build on our skills; we didn’t have a game or practice plan for Napa other than playing Colusa Rugby.” said Cody Beckley, captain of CCRFC.  “There was a lot of buildup for this match considering the history between the clubs, but we went to Napa and played solid, team rugby in all phases of the match.”

Assuming both clubs end their season winning throughout, the NCRFU seeding will be dependent on point differential, which will give Napa the #1 seed and CCRFC the #2 seed.  This is not unchartered territory for CCRFC, as they were the #2 seed in 2015 and went on to the USA Rugby National Championship Series Elite 8 before being eliminated by Wichita RFC.

“Our guys came out to play rugby without any reservations and we came away with a tie… a tie against a club that has put up 100+ points on nearly every club in the league that played an 80 minute match,” said coach Christian Cowsert.  “It was a great test for our club and sets the stage for playoffs.  But, now we need to focus on Mendocino who we face in the last home match of the season.”

CCRFC will complete league play at home on Saturday, April 9, 2016 to face the Mendocino Steam Donkeys 1:00 pm PST at Egling Middle School in Colusa.

Colusa County Rugby Football Club (C.C.R.F.C., Inc.) has been in existence since 1973. We are educating the community on a great sport and encourage everyone to participate in a fun and rigorous athletic activity. CCRFC has a mission to get more people playing rugby and educate our community through outreach.  We actively work with the Colusa community to develop a long lasting rugby tradition.  These programs involve many people of all athletic talents, sizes and shapes. In addition to strengthening our organization, we are actively putting programs in place to recruit youth to the sport of rugby.

The Williams Pioneer Review has a small staff of one, covering all of Colusa County; but we’re proud to have the assistance of a large army of community contributors to extend our range and reach. This is one of those stories. If you have a story you would like to share, please email them to: or give us a call.
