May Surprise: Friends of the Library Wine Tasting

“It has been a year-long celebration of 100 years of library service and the communities response to the library ‘open houses’ has been wonderful,” said Friends of the Colusa County Library Member, Cynthia White, “and today we all have the privilege to continue the legacy of reading in Colusa County.”

Held in conjunction with the Colusa May Surprise on Saturday, May 7, 2016, the Friends of the Colusa County Library will host a Wine and Cheese Tasting.

“We have had the pleasure of offering great wines, cheeses, and desserts, to the citizens of our county for the past 11 years,” said White, “The community has responded in such a tremendous fashion that we are left breathless at times.”

The Wine and Cheese Tasting is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers that directly benefits the Colusa County Free Library when funds are not available.

“In past years we have raised over $11,000,” said White, “every dime goes directly back to the library system to rent books, purchase supplies and provide funding for the summer reading program held in each of the communities.”

Featuring some delicious cheeses from the Rumiano Cheese Company in Willows, White commented that the cheeses complement the selection of wines from area vineyards.
“To top it off, the members of the Friends of the Library provide amazing desserts to finish off the tasting with a treat,” said White.

White commented that one of the signature activities during the wine and cheese tasting is the raffle of a solid wood, antique card catalog.
“Each drawer is filled with a different bottle of wine that has also been donated to the event,” said White.

Tickets for the raffle are $5 each and are available at the used bookstore, The Bookworm, located at 440 Market Street, in Colusa or from a member.

The wine and cheese tasting will start at noon at the Will S Green Park, 901 Parkhill in Colusa on Saturday, May 7, 2016; tickets can be purchased at $20 per person and will be sold at the door during the day of the event.

“We have been through wind, rain, and lots of sunshine – but it has always been a successful day and enjoyed by all,” said White.

Other events happening during the May Surprise event, include a Pacific Flyway Quilters luncheon, the Garden Club of Colusa County plant sale, the Colusa County Arts Council artisan fair and the City of Colusa Heritage Commission.

“We look forward to seeing everyone each year and celebrating this wonderful county that has affirmed to us that libraries are the spirit of a caring and literate community,” said White.
