A Good Time Had at May Surprise

Rain didn’t dampen the excitement as community members celebrated the month of May and the joyous season of spring.

A collective effort between the Colusa Garden Club, the Friends of the Colusa County Library, Pacific Flyway Quilt Guild, and the Colusa County Arts Council provided an opportunity to celebrate spring while fulfilling philanthropic efforts.

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, scores of individuals attended the annual May Surprise event that comprises a plant sale, quilt show, luncheon, wine tasting, and artisan fair.

Shoppers and garden enthusiasts browsed the plants, shrubs, and vegetables, prepared by the Garden Club of Colusa County during its annual plant sale.

“We had a great turnout early in the morning then it slowed down during the rain, but as soon as it stopped people came back out,” said Colusa Garden Club Member, Susan Gibbs, “Colusa County always comes out and supports us.”

While some shoppers browsed for plants, others sought advice gardening advice from Members of the Colusa County Master Gardeners.

During the plant sale, the Colusa County Arts Council hosted an array of artisans during its annual Artisan Fair. This year’s fair featured several vendors showcasing handmade jewelry, paintings, and birdhouses.

“We had a few vendors not show up,” said Arts Council Member, Susan Woods, “but it all worked out, with the wet weather we were able to let the quilters have space inside.”

The Pacific Flyway Quilters had their opportunity quilt on display as well as other items crafted by members for sale. The group also hosted a pulled pork lunch during the event.

As the day came to an end, the Friends of the Colusa County Library held its annual wine and cheese tasting. Proceeds from the wine tasting, raffle, and auction benefited the Colusa County Library. The Wine and Cheese tasting event is the organization’s largest fundraiser that helps the local library purchase books, purchase supplies and provide funding for reading programs.
