Local Photographer Helps Shelter Animals

Colusa photographer Elvira “Elly” Gutierrez loves animals. Recently, she began donating her professional skills to help Colusa County’s shelter animals get adopted.

Every other Friday morning, she photographs 3-4 dogs and cats at the shelter. She edits the photos and uploads them to social media. Her photos allow potential adopters to see the beauty and character of each animal in a more natural setting.

FOCCAS (Friends of the Colusa County Animal Shelter) volunteer Pam DaGrossa says the photos make a tremendous difference.

“When people see a gorgeous photo of a dog, they immediately connect to that beauty. It encourages them to take a second look and imagine that dog playing in their own yards,” said DaGrossa, “Dogs and cats don’t always look or act their best in a shelter kennel. Elly’s photos are a better reflection the dog’s or cat’s normal personality.”

Elly says she was recently faced with tragedies that reminded her of the importance of doing what you love.

“Making a difference in a life, has been on my heart since I was young girl. By partnering with the Colusa Animal Shelter, they have given me an opportunity to turn my passion into something that will change the life of not only a shelter animal, but of their new family as well. And for that, I am grateful,” Gutierrez said.

Elly’s own pets include a 3 year-old Lab/Pit mix named “Cali” and a calico cat named “Phoenix.” Both were taken in when their owners could no longer keep them. Her pets bring happiness to her family.

“There is something so beautiful in the way our pets love us just the way we are,” said Guiterrez.

Elly plans to offer Pet Portraiture as a part of her future photography services and pet photos of newly adopted pets and their families. Money from the latter would go to the FOCCAS to support shelter animals.

“I think there is a huge need to highlight our furry family members and by taking these portraits, it allows us to cherish their lives even more than we already do,” said Guterrez.

To kick off that new venture, she will take photos at FOCCAS’ upcoming fundraiser “Summertime Photos with Santa Paws.” People and their pets can have their portraits taken with Santa Claus in a summertime setting. The event will take place June 5, from 10am to 2pm at the Colusa Scout Cabin. The cost is $20 for one pose; $30 for two; and $40 for three. All monies raised will be donated to FOCCAS to support the shelter’s animals.

Elvira G’s website is You can see her shelter photos under “Store” in the album “Furry Friends.” To inquire about an animal, contact the Colusa County Animal Shelter at (530) 458-0229. The shelter is located at 929 Bridge Street in Colusa, behind the main Sheriff’s Office building. The shelter hour is 2-3pm, 7 days a week.
