Summer Poetry Series

The Colusa County Free Library is pleased to announce its Summer Poetry Series, starting June through the month of August.

The event will provide the opportunity for patrons to engage in a creative writing workshop to poetry readings, with the mission to make poetry more accessible to all members of our community.

“We all have our own unique voices and we discover them by sharing with family, friends, in small groups or in settings like the library,” said Colusa County Librarian, Stacey Costello, “ Reading poetry and bringing people together to hear the spoken word supports and develops community; it helps us write our story, which is at the heart of this wonderful enterprise.”

First up, on June 21, 2016, between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM, join poet and educator, Susan G. Wooldridge, for a word play and poetry writing workshop. Susan has been teaching poetry for over 20 years. She is the author of poemcrazy: freeing your life with words and Foolsgold: Making Something from Nothing (and finding your creative process).

“Whether you are a seasoned poet or an absolute beginner, this workshop is for you,” said Costello, “The workshop is free, thanks to the sponsorship of the California Center for the Book and Poets & Writers, Inc.”

On July 7, 2016, between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM, California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia will read from 99 POEMS: NEW & SELECTED and share his love of poetry and literacy. The free event is sponsored by the California State Library and the California Center for the Book. Internationally known, Gioia is the former chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and has published five full-length collections of poetry, as well as eight chapbooks.

“His poetry collection, Interrogations at Noon, won the 2002 American Book Award. An influential critic as well, Gioia’s 1991 volume Can Poetry Matter?, is credited with helping to revive the role of poetry in American public culture,” Costello commented.

In 2014 he won the Aiken-Taylor Award for lifetime achievement in American poetry.

“The August event is TBD; suggestions and volunteers are welcome!” said Costello.

For information or questions about the readings or to join the group list, please contact the County Librarian at 530/458-0372 or scostello@countyofcolusa.org.
