CWA releases 2016-2017 waterfowl regulations

The California Waterfowl Association has released a general guide of the hunting regulations for the 2016-2017 Waterfowl Season, and a number of changes have been made since the 2015-2016 season.

Among the more noteworthy changes to the regulations are the increasing of the youth hunter age from 15 and younger to 17 and younger. The special youth hunt days this season are February 4 and 5, 2017.

Duck and goose season will begin on October 22, 2016 and will run for 100 days through January 29, 2017. The daily bag limits for ducks remains the same as the 2015-2016 season: seven birds, which may contain seven mallards – only two of which can be hens – two pintail, two canvasback, two redheads, and three scaup.

Also worth noting is that the daily bag limit for geese increased from 25 birds per day to 30 birds per day, of which 20 can be white geese (up from 15) and 10 can be dark geese.

In the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area, however, only three of those dark geese may be white-fronted geese from October 22, 2016 to December 21, 2016. After December 21, the white-fronted goose season within the management area closes entirely. The boundaries for the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area are Highway 162 to the north, Hahn Road to the south, Interstate 5 to the west, and Highway 45 to the east.

The late white-fronted goose and white goose season runs from February 11, 2017 through February 15, 2017, except in the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area, where the white-fronted geese may not be taken.
