CSU Chico Agribusiness Institute releases annual report

Last week, the Agribusiness Institute at California State University, Chico released its report on “The Contribution of Agriculture to Northeastern California’s Economy in 2014.”

Chico State professor Eric Houk oversaw the annual report, which serves to document the significance of agriculture production, processing, and its related industries to the overall economy of Northeastern California. Colusa was among 13 counties included in the study area.

According to the key findings of the report, the total value of agricultural production in Northeastern California, now over $4.5 billion, more than doubled from 2004 to 2014. Colusa County had the highest value of production in 2014, at $876 million, while having the highest unemployment rate in the study area at 17.5 percent.

The study also found that during that timeframe, farm production expenses have also more than doubled in the study area. Net farm income has more than tripled over that same span, while total government payments have decreased by 68 percent.

Within the study area, the overall agriculture industry is responsible for about 17.3 percent of all employment, and 21 percent of all private sector jobs. That is to say, nearly one in five jobs in the region are attributed to agriculture. The total value of labor income as a result of the overall agriculture industry was estimated at $3.2 billion, or 18.2 percent of all labor income.

The full report for this year, along with the reports from 2012 and 2013, is available online at https://www.csuchico.edu/ag/about/agribusiness-institute/■
