Inside Straight opened the free concerts in the park Thursday at the Venice park in Williams.

A mix of music styles rounds out the band line-up for the Concert in the Park series held through August 11 at Venice Park. Performances begin at 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 28, and August 11. Admission is free.

In addition to lively music, local non-profit organizations will serve dinner for guests to enjoy.

“We wanted to host a free venue for people to some enjoyment, and to help give back to the community,” said Citizens for a Better Williams President, Pat Ash.

Ash commented that the event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of local businesses.

“Each year we solicit businesses to sponsor the bands and they always come through for us,” said Ash. She also commented that they allow local nonprofits to serve dinner and desserts helping fundraise for their causes.

“The Williams Varsity Basketball team cooked tacos this week, and on July 28, the Williams Police K9 Association will be cooking Tri-tip Sandwiches, and CBW will be serving strawberry shortcakes,” said Ash.

Performing during the July 28 concert is the band Last Call.

“It is a group assembled by a local, and employee of the City of Williams, Mike Mitchell,” said Ash.

With only hosting three concerts this summer, the final concert held on August 11, will be a finger licking good time.

“We are once again hosting our second Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off,” said Ash.

The Badge Challenge Rib Cook-off was started to help raise funding for the Williams Fire Departments restoration efforts in Old Engine No. 1.

“After the success of last year’s event, we thought why to stop with the fire department?” said Ash.

Ash commented that this year’s proceeds would benefit the Williams Police K9 Association.

“The Williams K9 Unit is an important part of our police department, and we wanted to do what we could to help them with the financial burden,” said Ash.

Local, barbecue rib multi-champion, Jim Saso offered his expertise with planning the event.

“We are very gracious that Jim stepped up and offered his assistance to organize the event rules,” said Ash, “I am also very thrilled that we had so many police and fire agencies and community members that wanted to get involved.”

Those participating in the cook-off include Blue Line Barbecue, the Williams Police Department, the Williams Fire Department, Sacramento River Fire Department, Gene McKasson, and 2nQue/Colusa County Law Enforcement.

Ash commented that there are only 300 tickets available.

“This year tickets are limited, we don’t want to run out of food,” she said, “no tickets will be sold at the event so get your’s before they sell out.”

The Rib Cook-off will serve at 5:30 PM allowing guests to get their food before the band starts.

Tickets are $20 each and include one rib from each team, beans, and side dishes prepared by the Williams Police Department and garlic bread made by Louis Cairos. They can be purchased at New Attitude Salon (530 7th Street in Williams), or the Williams Pioneer Review (611 Bridge Street in Colusa). Tickets can also be purchased by calling (530) 520-0096.■
