A dozen dancers participated in National Dance Day held at the Colusa County Fairgrounds Saturday.

Jyl Perry Torrens, of Stardust Dance Studio in Maxwell, hosted the event in Colusa that helps give children the experience of dance, to educate them about the many styles of dance, and to expose them to the lifelong benefits dance has to offer.

“We want to raise awareness that kids need to get up and get moving,” said Torrens, “what a better way than to have fun and dance.”

National Dance Day took place across the nation on July 30, with hundreds of communities participating included the Music Center in Los Angeles, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando.

The multi-step dance was choreographed by the “So you think you can Dance” All-Stars, Marko Germar, Comfort Fedoke, Kathryn McCormic & Robert Roldan. The dance was choreographed to the song ‘Dance Like Yo Daddy” by Meghan Traino.

“Everyone across the nation is participating in this song,” said Torrens.

Torrens commented that a video of the dance performed that day will be uploaded to the Dizzy Feet Foundation in hopes to be recognized in its National Dance Day 2016 Montage.

Launched in 2010 by “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator and Dizzy Feet Foundation co-president Nigel Lythgoe, National Dance Day is an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July. This grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fight obesity.
