Annual Relay for Life this Weekend

Hundreds are expected to attend the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Colusa County event on Saturday, August 6.

Held at the Colusa County Fairgrounds the event starts at 9:00 AM with a survivors breakfast prepared by Sweet Beans Bakery and the Colusa Lions Club. The Survivors Breakfast is free to the cancer survivors, their families, and their caregivers.

Opening Ceremonies will begin at 10:00 AM with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2441 serving as the Color Guard and the National Anthem sang by Rosalyn and Bailey Wilson.

At 10:30 AM, the Survivor Lap will kick off the event with cancer survivors making the first lap around the track and receiving metals from the Williams Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Several themed laps will continue every hour, and fun activities every half hour.

Some themed laps include the Dance Lap, Born to Be Wild Lap, Favorite Fairy Tale/Super Hero Lap, Tutu’s for Tata’s Lap, Paint your World Purple, Country Wester, Sumer Beach Party in Marga-Relay-Ville, and the Road to Recovery Lap, the Patriotic Lap, and the Neon Glow Lap.

Entertainment includes local D.J. Kent Boes, Zumba with Vanessa, a special fairy tale character appearance, and the infamous Miss’ter Relay Competition.

At 3:00 PM, a special cutting event will be held for Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a charity campaign created by Pantene in partnership with HairUWear® and the American Cancer Society® that encourages people to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair to create real-hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Local stylist Polly Codorniz will be providing the hair cutting services.

At 6:00 PM, teams are encouraged to create, construct, and build a train, plane, or automobile to participate in the ‘Road to Recovery Lap’. Participants are asked to construct their creations out of cardboard, must be a maximum width of four feet and accommodate two people. No mechanical parts are allowed, just human power.

The Luminaria ceremony will begin at 9:15 PM where the relay track will be lined with hundreds of luminaria bags. The luminaria ceremony is held during to remember those who lost the battle to cancer, celebrate those who’ve won, and providing hope to those still fighting. Luminaria bags can be purchased during the event and can be customized. Caregiver Angelina Johnson will serve as the guest speaker during the Luminaria Event. Karsyn Gwinnup will provide vocal entertainment.

At 9:45 PM the Fight Back and Closing Ceremonies will commence and the final lap wrapping up the event at 10:00 PM.

As of Tuesday, August 2, nine teams were registered with a total of 148 participants. In total, $12,664.78 was raised prior to the event – a long way from its $50,000 goal. The event raised $29,303.05 in 2015.

There is no admittance fee required to attend the event; however attendees are encouraged to shop and browse the many team booths – many of which have items for sale as part of a team fundraiser.
