Colusa County Libraries Offer Digital Literacy Classes this Fall

Starting September 1, the Colusa County Branch Libraries will be offering free digital literacy classes to teens and senior citizens.

“The library will host 20 in-depth workshops, which can be taken individually, or as a series; each branch library will offer one abridged workshop for teens and one abridged workshop for seniors that address the most important aspects of the in-depth workshops,” said Literacy Coordinator Alissa Morrow.

In addition to the 20 in-depth workshops, Morrow stated that there would also be a workshop for parents of young children and teens on internet safety, monitoring social media and addressing online bullying.

“With an increase in reliance on digital technology and understanding, obtaining basic computer skills and learning how to navigate the Internet safely has quickly become as important as traditional reading, math, and analytical literacy,” said Morrow.

According to Morrow, studies have shown that a Digital Divide, the growing gap between the underprivileged members of society who do not have access to computers or the internet, and those who do, is growing at an alarming rate. The Digital Divide impacts the elderly, immigrant and second language learners, and those living in rural communities and below the poverty line despairingly.  In response, the Colusa County Free Library’s literacy program realized that the issue was too imperative not to address.

Recently awarded a $4,000 grant from the Glenn County Health and Human Services Agency’s Colusa-Glenn-Trinity Community Action Partnership, the Colusa County Library was able to purchase laptops for the Digital Literacy classes

“I was inspired to assist in the development of digital literacy courses when someone close to me was duped into giving away her personal financial information online,” said Morrow. “Technology can be intimidating, especially if you are not familiar with its use, and this is something that the library can assist with.”

In addition to the Colusa-Glenn-Trinity Community Action Partnership Grant, the Colusa County Library was awarded the Dollar General Adult Literacy Grant worth up to $3,100.

“With these funds, the library purchased seven iPads that will be used in literacy app workshops that will occur at the Colusa Branch throughout the year,” said Morrow.

Morrow stated that when classes are not in session, the iPads and laptops will be available for use in the main branch of the library.

“It is the hopes that the Digital Literacy Program becomes a permanent fixture at the library, and will continue to develop new programming and workshops on a variety of topics, including Internet safety, coding and the use of Photoshop and other editing software,” said Morrow.

For more information about all library digital literacy class offerings, contact Morrow at (530) 458-0373, or drop by your local branch.
