Colusa Farmers Market now accepting CalFresh EBT

DSC03560The Colusa Certified Farmers Market, held each Tuesday, is now accepting electronic benefit transfer (EBT) or CalFresh for purchases of fresh produce, meats, and other approved consumables.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program provides free EBT equipment to eligible farmer’s markets to encourage healthy eating among EBT recipients.

“I am excited that we can provide CalFresh for our customers,” said Colusa Market Manager, Jennifer Diaz. “it’s a great addition and a great benefit to promote healthy eating.”

How the program works

When a CalFresh card holder arrives at the Colusa Certified Farmers Market on a Thursday evening from 4 PM to 6 PM, they will go to the information booth where they will receive tokens.

“We will process a set amount the individual would like to spend and give them that number in EBT Tokens,” said Diaz.

The CalFresh shopper then can browse the market in search of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods for purchase and exchange the tokens the same as cash. However, CalFresh EBT tokens can not be used on hot food, ready-to-eat foods, or non-food items. Change will not be given for EBT Tokens.

Diaz added that the market also accepts WIC.

“We will be the only Certified Farmers Market in the County to accept EBT and WIC,” said Diaz.

The Colusa Certified Farmers Market is an emporium for healthy food shoppers. Offering fresh eggs, nuts, honey, fruits, and vegetables.

The Colusa Certified Farmers Market will begin offering the CalFresh EBT program on Thursday, August 25. The market will run to the end of September.

“In addition to CalFresh, anyone needing to pay with a credit or debit card can also visit the market information booth and I will assist them with their purchase,” said Diaz. <
