More than just books

The library is more than a place filled with books and an abundance of information. It is a place where the mind can wander, create, discover, and, most importantly, thrive.

As county libraries seek the opportunity to fill needs within their community, the Colusa County Branch Library is offering its greatest asset to its patrons — creativity.

Starting the month of September, the Colusa Branch Library will feature a weekly craft for children to make.

“It’s a fairly simple craft that is assembled in just a few steps,” said Colusa County Librarian Stacey Costello.

This week, it was a dragonfly created with googly eyes, sequins, some pipe cleaners, and a clothespin. This simple craft allows children to be creative and to discover the opportunities a library has.

“We want our libraries to be a fun place to be,” said Costello. “Come in look at a book, and make a craft.”

The crafts, Costello said, could make an appearance at other local branches.

“We don’t want to force something on our other branches; however, if there is a need or it is wanted, we’d happily make that happen,” she said.

In addition to fun crafts, The Colusa County Library offers a tranquil place for adults to relax and have a little fun.

“Adult Coloring Books have become popular over the last couple of years, and we have some sheets available here, with some colored pencils,” said Costello.

She welcomes anyone looking for a place with some peace and quiet to come and color a page.

“It’s very relaxing, and its quite popular,” she added.

Not into adult coloring books? No worries, a few of the libraries tables have vinyl checkerboard and backgammon appliqués.

“We are looking for ways to be creative and to expand our services,” said Costello. “So far, our patrons are enjoying what we have developed.”

The Colusa County Branch Library is located at 738 Market Street, Colusa, and is open Monday 9 AM – 2 PM, Tuesday and Thursday 10 AM – 8 PM, Wednesday and Friday 10 AM – 5 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 2 PM.
