Book Club Makes Reading Selections

lasso-the-west-timothy-eganThe Colusa Book Club will begin its 2016–17 schedule of discussions with its first discussion on Oct. 5, with Lasso the Wind: Away to the New West by Timothy Egan.

The book was recommended by Jim White who read the book over the summer with eight other titles.

“I think it is worth everybody reading,” said White. “[Egan] is an excellent researcher, and it was a great book.”

The non-fiction book reads like fiction, a journalistic review of the wild west where Egan leads his readers on a unique, freewheeling tour through age-old battles for land and water. He makes 14 stops, two each in Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, and Utah; and one each in Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and California. In his unique blend of historical reflection and passionate criticism, Egan produced a moving study of the West: how it became what it is, and where it is going.

The book is a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. “Sprawling in scope … Mr. Egan uses the past powerfully to explain and give dimension to the present,” The New York Times wrote.

The Los Angeles Times wrote, “Fine reportage … honed and polished until it reads more like literature than journalism.”

For the Nov. 2 discussion, the group will review The Little Red Chairs by Edna O’Brien; Jan. 12, 11/22/63 by Stephen King; Feb. 9, Wintering by Peter Geye; and Mar. 9, The Green Road by Ann Enright.

The book club meets at 6:30 PM in the Moorse Conference Room at the Colusa County Library (738 Market Street, Colusa).
