The Colusa County Board of Supervisors, absent Kim Vann, voted unanimously to appoint Chief Deputy District Attorney Matt Beauchamp as the new Colusa County District Attorney.

Beauchamp will take over the office after current elected DA John Poyner officially retires on Oct. 28.

Beauchamp began his tenure as the Chief Deputy District Attorney of Colusa County in Sept. of 2011. Prior to that, Beauchamp had worked in private practice and in the Contra Costa and Sutter County District Attorneys’ offices.

“I’m happy to be appointed, and I expect the office to run pretty much the same as it has in past,” Beauchamp said after the board meeting on Tuesday. “I intend to follow facts and see where they lead, and to be balanced in our approach to prosecuting crimes.”

Poyner, who recommended Beauchamp as his replacement, was happy with the board’s decision.

“I’m happy the board did it, and that they had an ad hoc committee and were transparent about it. I think he’ll do a great job, and that’s why I recommended him.”
