440 Christmas meals handed out

More than 400 Colusa County residents are guaranteed to have a hearty holiday meal this Christmas.

On Friday morning, volunteers with the Colusa County Food Basket Association’s Christmas Food Drive put together and distributed 440 Christmas meals to Colusa County families at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.

According to organizer Patti Hickel, the Colusa County Food Basket Association, with the help of community volunteers, collected, boxed, and distributed the food baskets — which were filled with donations made at every school in Colusa County, at Impact Life Thrift Store, and at area churches.

Volunteers included seventh and eighth grade students from Our Lady of Lourdes School, children from Colusa County’s numerous 4-H groups, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2441, the Colusa Lions Club, Colusa-Glenn Farm Production Credit, and the Young Farmers and Ranchers Association.

Some of those volunteers helped the Colusa County Food Basket Association distribute on Friday, and others helped put the boxes together in the days leading up to the event.

“We go there two days, to sort and to help hand the baskets out,” Said VFW Post 2441 Commander Bill Tanner. “It’s a good experience. There were about eight of us there on both days. Everyone enjoys it, and you get to visit with the people you are volunteering with. We enjoyed being out there again this year.”

An additional 50 individual volunteers assisted, as well.

In addition to food donations made at county schools, the Food Basket Association received financial donations from local businesses and individuals, which allowed the group to round out the baskets to put together complete meals.

Members of the Colusa County Sheriff’s Volunteer Citizen Service Unit directed traffic on Friday.

“I have a good group of volunteers this year,” Hickel said as workers were boxing up food items on Thursday. “Usually we’re here until around 10:30 AM or so, and we’re going to be done a lot sooner this year… I have more volunteers each year, and what has happened now is that I just get out of the way.”
