Manuel Anthony Massa Jr. (1942-2015)

OBIT - Manuel MassaManuel Anthony Massa Jr. died January 9, 2016 at his home in Princeton.  He was born August 15, 1942 in Colusa, California, and lived his entire life in Princeton.

He attended schools in Princeton and graduated from Princeton High in 1960.  He immediately joined the National Guard in Willows.  After serving in the Guard he attended Chico State College for two and a half years, leaving to farm rice with his father when needed on the farm.  He married Mary Elizabeth Lehfeldt, his high school sweetheart, on December 22, 1963, and they recently celebrated their 52nd anniversary.

He was active in many school and community organizations:  Princeton Young Farmers, California Young Farmers state president, Boy Scout leader, 4-H leader, Little League coach, Princeton Joint Unified School District board president (20 years), and was inducted to the Glenn County Office of Education Educators Hall of Fame.  He was a Princeton Volunteer Fireman, and was the secretary/treasurer of the Princeton Firemen’s Association, where he wrote and received many grants to update equipment.  He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Princeton High School Ag Advisory committee, Rice Producers of California board, California Rice Commission board of directors, and scorekeeper for the Princeton High School girl’s basketball team and he was also very active with the Saint Anthony Holy Ghost Portuguese Festa.  He loved RV-ing, and was looking forward to another trip.  He felt at home among the saguaro cacti.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Beth; sons Christopher (Louise), Gregory (Raquel) and Darren (Anna), 10 grandchildren, brother Alfred Massa and sister Lucille Bruggman and many nieces and nephews, and he had a deep fondness for all of them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Aldina Massa and brother Eugene Massa.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 15, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Princeton. Rosary recital will begin at 9:30 am with the Mass to follow at 10:00 am.  Burial will follow at the Princeton Cemetery.
