George “Barnyard” Daniels (1933-2016)

OBIT - George Daniels (C)George Brian Daniels, 82, of Arbuckle, California, passed away on April 24, 2016, surrounded by family at his daughter’s home in Princeton, California.

He was born on October 19, 1933, in Alameda, California, to Elizabeth and William Daniels. George grew up in ‘Project City’, now known as the City of Shasta, with his sister Joan.

George attended Shasta Junior College and competed in Boxing. He was later drafted into the United States Army in 1953. Following service in the military, George attended Chico State College where he was featured in Sports Illustrated after competing in the National Boxing Championship. George was an avid boxer and won many championships.

He then completed his teaching credentials at UC Davis in Agricultural Education.

George worked with the Pierce Joint Unified School District for over 45 years. He taught agriculture, mathematics, and U.S. History. He also drove school bus for the district and did a short term as a guidance counselor. He had a true love for his students, and each one of them held a special place in his heart. George passionately told many stories about his students.

When George wasn’t teaching, he managed the Williams Bowling Alley in the evenings and during weekends, he coached little league, acted as the FFA Advisor, and delivered the Sacramento Bee and the San Francisco Chronicle.

His children were his life. He raised both of them as a single father, making many sacrifices, allowing him to create everlasting memories. His bond with his children was unbreakable.

Having pockets full of candy, he was known as the ‘candy man’. George would distribute candy to those in need of a smile.

He is survived by his son John (Mary) Daniels of Willows; his daughter and princess, Barbara (Guy) Gomes of Princeton; Grand Children, Hatti (William) Wolf of Colusa; Evan Daniels of Willows; Hailey Daniels of Chico; and Elizabeth (Mike) Smith of Chico; and great-grandchildren Abigail, William Jr, Matthew, and Maddison of Colusa; Aiden Joseph of Durham; and Gregory, Jakobb, and Lucas of Chico. He also survived by his sister Joann Ruth of Fair Oaks; nephews, Allan and Bobby Ruth and a niece Sharron Ruth.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and William Daniels; his nephew Terry Ruth; his buddy Joe Minton; as well as several friends and students who he loved dearly.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 2:00 PM, at the home of Barbara and Guy Gomes, 139 Commercial Street, Princeton. There will be a sweets-and-treats reception, in true George fashion, following the memorial service at Portuguese Hall in Princeton.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in George’s name to the Pierce High School Ag Department, or the Arbuckle Fire Department.
