Home Obituaries Erline Goodman (1939-2016)

Erline Goodman (1939-2016)

Erline Goodman, 77, of Arbuckle, passed away on Dec. 19, 2016, surrounded by family at her home.

Erline was born Nov. 13, 1939, in Woodland, CA, to Manuel and Helen ‘Agnes’ Avilla. She attended the Holy Rosary Catholic School and decided to pursue a lifelong career in education and obtained her credentials at the University of Oregon.

In the 1960s Erline began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in the small community of Yolo and later taught for the Pierce Joint Unified School District.

Erline loved interacting with children, and taught many generations of students. While most of her teaching career was spent at Johnson Junior High, she taught many subjects, including literature, science, health, physical education, and art. She also coached basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading.

When Erline wasn’t teaching, she was a member of the Arbuckle Golf Club, the book club, and the local bridge club. She was also an avid volunteer of the Arbuckle Revitalization Committee and helped organize the annual opportunity raffle during the car show each year.

Erline loved to garden. Many had said her gardens should’ve been in the pages of Better Homes & Gardens, but for Erline gardening was just a hobby — though she did allow a few weddings to be hosted there.

As a child, Erline wanted to be the first commercial female pilot. She did all she could to learn and to explore aviation and became a member of a flying club, and aided in the Colusa County annual Fly-in. Many of Erline’s students remember the annual flying trip at her home. Thanks to the help of local aviators, scores of eighth-grade students were given an opportunity to fly around the county; some had the chance to take the yoke – albeit for a second or two.

With the heart of a pilot, Erline loved to travel. Each year with a group of good friends she would attend the Shakespeare Festival and take trips to new places. She loved to ski – both in the snow and on the water. Her adventitious spirit lead her to take a dive and bungee jumped into Salmon River. When she wasn’t looking for adventure or a place to get away, Erline retreated to, Zephyr Cove in Lake Tahoe.

Erline is survived by her son, Bret Goodman and his wife Jeanine, of Lafayette, CA; Daughter Sheryl Goodman, of Colusa, CA; and her brother Mike Avilla, of Mountain View, CA. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A Memorial is scheduled at 10 AM on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 412 Laurel St. in Arbuckle.

Memorial contributions shall be made in Erline’s name to the Pierce Pride Foundation, PO Box 1048, Arbuckle, CA 95912.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNary-Moore Funeral Service (FD-410).
