Life as I see it… [Sept 14, 2016]

By Kathy Craigo | Local Columnist

I took a big step this past week: I bought throw pillows.

That may not seem like a big deal to many people or any people for that matter, but to me, it was a sign of real change and commitment.

I bought the pillows for the sofa in what will be mine and Tom’s house once we are married.

He said that with the purchase I’ve made an investment now, so he’s pretty sure I’m not going to change my mind about the wedding.

Once you’ve been on your own for as long as I have, it isn’t easy to change your habits or change your routine. Luckily for me, Tom is understanding of all of that and tends to give me a little room to adjust.

Something as simple as buying throw pillows is a sign of adjustment. A year ago I would have found the pillows I liked and bought them. This time was different. I took a photo of them and texted it to him to see I he thought they’d be OK in the room. Really?

I have to give the man some credit, though. He is making the concession of giving up his pool table so that the game room can become a sitting room. I know, I know, that sounds pretentious at best, but really it’s not. He doesn’t play pool anymore, and he was already thinking about changing the room before I came along.

I love living out my little farm house in a walnut orchard, but I have to admit, the prospect of moving up on a hill overlooking the lake doesn’t make me sad. Now that Tom sees the logic of replacing the pool table with a big overstuffed chair and ottoman angled to look out the window at the lake, its even better.

Life if full of change. This month included the dates of my what would have been my 49th wedding anniversary had my late husband lived, and also the date of what would have been my mother’s 92nd birthday.

I feel blessed to have had my mother and my husband in my life. I miss them both, but I also know that each of them is happy that I have moved on and that I have built a life for myself.

This past week, my friend David Bishop (you may know him as Santa) sent me a photo of his granddaughter seated in her little chair placed in front of the window to the oven. The title of the photo was “Coookies” and she was watching and waiting for them to bake.

In this life, we are living, and we are waiting for something all of the time. Isn’t it great that we have those experiences come and that we have memories to draw on?

Life is good today.
