Postmaster John H. Leining was arrested for “opening a sealed letter.” the letter was not addressed to him, but his defense a trial was that he could legally do so if treason was suspected. (There were some political unrest in the county at this time. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated April 14, 1865, and there was speculation that some Colusa residents may have been linked to this event.)
