Life as I see it… (10/26/2016)

This past week, I went up to Stonyford for an open house hosted by District IV Supervisor Gary Evans.

It had been a while since I went up the hill, so there were a few new things I hadn’t seen, and I have to say, I was quite impressed.

So often we tend to forget the treasures we have in our own county.

The folks at Stonyford have a beautiful Community Hall and a very impressive museum.

Although only one room, the Stonyford Museum packs a punch as the collection of history and remembrances go.

I’ve learned that Supervisor Evans had a hand in not only making sure the Community Hall got built, but also in preserving the former Stonyford Town Hall as the now Stonyford Museum.

The room was filled with treasurers from the past, and what made it so great was the fact that these treasures often came from the homes of longtime Stonyford families.

We need to preserve our history and we need to give it the respect it deserves.

The Stonyford community has worked very hard to make sure that happens.

My recommendation for a day’s outing would be to drive to Stonyford, visit the museum, and maybe stop for a deli sandwich for a picnic lunch.

Sometimes it is the simple pleasures in life that mean the most.

I’m big on memories, and while I enjoy making new ones, I don’t want to forget the ones I’ve already made.

I’m proud of Colusa County and I have a great deal to be thankful for here. I had wonderful childhood and teenage years here. Many of my childhood and high school friends are still here, so it still seems like home even though I lived out of state for so many years.

I was reminded this week of the many blessings we all share in this community. I spent a considerable amount of time at Pumpkin Village. The looks on the kids’ faces as they took in the wonder of it all made all of the hard work it takes to pull this off well worth the effort.

We are blessed in this community with so many people who are willing to help, donate time, and work hours so that we can continue with these great events.

There is still another weekend of Haunted Paintball Hayrides and also the Community Haunted House.

I admit, I’ve been a little surprised at some of the folks who want to be zombies for the paintball hayride. You just never know what goes on in the minds of men, or is it true: “The Shadow Knows?”

Halloween is almost here. Amongst the scary is the fun. I remember growing up in Grimes, and it was always fun.

Ray Lauppe always made a haunted house in his house. We knew he was in there and we knew he was going to scare us, but we just kept going back.

We knew to go to the Starnater house, because we would be welcomed into their kitchen and be able to pick our own popcorn ball as the family took care to make tons of them.

Things were simpler then. We didn’t have to x-ray our candy.  We just had to make sure we didn’t eat too much too soon or we’d get sick.

We guarded our bags of treats so that we knew exactly what we had and we’d know if someone snitched one.

Those were simple times. Homemade costumes, community members we knew we could trust. It wasn’t about being afraid. It was about fun. Plain and simple: it’s as it should be now.

Life is good today.
