Colusa Veterans Corner: California Issued Veteran Driver Licenses and ID Cards

California provides a simple and official way for Veterans to confirm their military service.  One year ago, the State of California began offering our Veterans the opportunity to place a printed “VETERAN” designation on their California driver license or identification card.

During the first ten months of this successful program, more than 34,300 Veterans received a new driver license and identification card that honors and recognizes the military service of our Veterans.  I encourage our Veterans to contact me to start the process now or at renewal time for your license or ID.

While you are at my County Veterans Service Office (CVSO), you can learn about your earned benefits.  I will assist Veterans and their families with obtaining local, state, and federal benefits. According to the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), more than 6,300 Veterans who visited a CVSO in the last year filed benefit claims with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

As a bonus, your VETERAN designation means businesses can easily confirm Veteran status when offering discounts. That may come in handy when you are visiting a local store or restaurant honoring our Veterans.

Obtaining your “VETERAN” designation on a driver license or ID card is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

First, Get Your Records. Find your military discharge certificate (DD Form 214).  If you need assistance obtaining your military records, then contact me at (530)458-0388.

Second, Visit Me. Take your DD Form 214 and government photo identification to my CVSO and obtain your Veteran Status Verification Form.

And, Third, Visit Any DMV.  Go on-line or call any California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office for an appointment.  Then bring your Veteran Status Verification Form to DMV. Complete your application, pay $5.00 Veteran designation fee (plus any other required fees) and complete any testing requirements. To schedule an appointment at any DMV, visit www.dmv.ca.gov or call 800-777-0133.

CalVet, DMV, CVSOs, and the state legislature collaborated closely on this new outreach initiative for our nearly two million Veterans living in California.

Please remember, Veterans must first visit a CVSO before going to DMV.

The Colusa County Veteran Services office is here to serve veterans and their dependents. I can complete the DMV Veteran Status Verification Form for the new California Veteran Designation on your driver’s license and California I.D. cards to honorably discharged veterans.  There are many state and federal benefits available to veterans and their dependents that they have earned. To find out if you are eligible for any of these benefits, visit or call our office.  I can and will assist you in completing all required forms and application.  You can get information on the Web from the Colusa County Veterans Service Office webpage at http://www.countyofcolusa.org/index.aspx?nid=180
